The Harmonized System code is the single most important number in international trade. Get it wrong, and everything downstream falls apart — duty calculations, customs clearance, trade agreements, and even whether your shipment gets released.
Yet most Indian MSMEs treat HS code classification as an afterthought. Here are the five most expensive mistakes we see.
Mistake 1: Using 4-Digit Codes Instead of 6-Digit
Many exporters stop at the 4-digit heading level. But customs authorities require 6-digit (or 8-digit) classification. A 4-digit code is like giving someone your state instead of your full address.
Mistake 2: Copying Codes from Suppliers
Your domestic supplier's HS code may not match the code required for export. The classification can differ based on processing, composition, and intended use.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Country-Specific Variations
While the first 6 digits are internationally harmonised, the 7th and 8th digits vary by country. The code your buyer uses may not match yours.
Mistake 4: Not Checking FTA Eligibility
The wrong HS code means missing out on preferential duty rates under Free Trade Agreements. This can mean the difference between 0% and 15% import duty.
Mistake 5: Using AI Tools Without Verification
AI-powered HS code finders (including ours) are excellent starting points — but always verify against the official customs tariff schedule before shipping.
