The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) that is mandatory for any business wanting to import or export goods from India.
Who Needs an IEC?
Every person or entity engaged in import or export of goods requires an IEC. There are some exemptions — personal imports below specified values, and certain government organisations.
Documents Required
1. PAN Card of the business/proprietor
2. Aadhaar Card
3. Bank account details (cancelled cheque)
4. Business registration proof
5. Passport-size photograph
Application Process
1. Visit the DGFT website (dgft.gov.in)
2. Register with your PAN and create a login
3. Fill the online application form (ANF 2A)
4. Upload required documents
5. Pay the application fee (₹500)
6. Submit and receive IEC within 2-3 working days

- IEC is now linked to PAN — one PAN, one IEC
- IEC does not expire but must be updated annually on DGFT portal
- Ensure your bank account details are correct — DGFT verifies against bank records
